Meet Dr. Mariela Lopez

Dr. Lopez was born and raised in Miami, Florida. With a heightened multicultural exposure, she developed a love for art, literature and music. Having accomplished a stellar academic record, she was the recipient of the highly competitive Florida Academic Scholars Award, which provided a full academic scholarship to the university of her choice. She pursued her undergraduate degrees at the University of Florida having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish History and Literature, Cum Laude. During this time, she participated in multiple medical missions including a month-long visit to an orphanage in rural Ecuador. Dr. Lopez also assumed multiple leadership roles in various medical organizations including AMSA. She developed a passion for scientific research in the early years of her undergraduate education and presented her work at an international level.

She was accepted into her first choice for medical school at the University of Florida. As a top student in her graduating class, she was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and was one of four students in her class to be asked to serve on the admissions committee.

She was accepted among the nation’s top medical students into the highly competitive six-year integrated plastic and reconstructive residency program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. During residency, Dr. Lopez was prolific in her pursuit of furthering her knowledge in the field—she presented at over 15 local and national meetings as well as published several abstracts, journal articles, and book chapters. She was also the recipient of several awards including Outstanding Resident of the Year, Outstanding Scientific Presentation by the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Women in Hand Surgery Scholarship by the American Association of Hand Surgery. While Chief Resident, she furthered her experience by continuing international medical missions including a cleft lip and palate mission trip to Mexico.

She had the privilege to rotate through and train with some of the best hospitals and plastic surgeons in the world: John Sealy Hospital, Shriners Burn Hospital for Children, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, St. Joseph Medical Center, and The Cronin-Brauer Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at Shriners Hospital.

Dr. Lopez furthered her training by completing an additional year of microsurgery and breast cancer reconstruction in the most prestigious, rigorous and sought-after reconstructive fellowship in the world at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Outside of the Office

Dr. Lopez is a loving and devoted wife and mother to two beautiful children and an adorable rescue dog. Her husband is a neurosurgeon who is passionate about complex spine surgery. Dr. Lopez loves nothing more than spending time with her family. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking, traveling and tennis.
